April in Winter (2018) || Short Fiction
At the bottom of a frozen lake lie April's husband along with his snowmobile, unable to be retrieved until the spring thaw. With him trapped beneath the ice, April finds herself in limbo - in her mind, he is neither alive, nor really dead - the winter allows her to deny the truth. April becomes obsessed with the coyote who raids her chicken coop. Paranoid that the coyote is stalking her, she sets out with her husband's old rifle to hunt it down. When her hunt takes an unexpected turn, April is forced to confront the ways of the natural world and face her reality.
